In this chapter we explore how completely idiotic a 10 year old can be :) The last part gets kind of weird, but stick with me! I promise it’ll make sense. Kind of.
Cole hurried into the room, dragging his dad, who barely had time to take off his shoes before the excited 5th grader grabbed his hand and hauled him into Cole's room, in with him. Excitedly babbling to his father, James, Cole abruptly stopped talking and was suddenly very confused. Ian was gone!
James barely had time to comprehend what was happening before Cole was on his knees, searching the floor desperately. Cole had said what now? That his big brother Ian had been shrunk to an inch tall by a mysterious man with disappearing pills? Sighing, he said, "Please Cole, I'm tired and I don't have time for pranks."
Cole could hardly believe his ears. His dad thought this was a prank? "But, he really was-" He started before he was cut off.
"If you need to, ask Ian when he comes back from his run, to read you part of your novel. Otherwise, go to sleep. It's late." James headed to the master bedroom rubbing his eyes. Sometimes, Cole just didn't get the message that he didn't have the time for things like pranks. Meanwhile, in the room, Cole was furious. Why didn't his dad believe him? And where did Ian go? Concern for his miniature brother quickly took over his frustration with his father. What if he shrunk more? Or what if he fell? Or what if he had fell and been-
Quickly checking the bottom of his foot, Cole was happy to dismiss that fear from his mind. He was going to have to get used to looking down at the floor more often. Looking around, Cole couldn't really see anywhere where Ian could have been. Calling for him would be useless, since Cole didn't have a prayer of hearing him from this distance.
Scanning his messy desk, he decided to clean it up first before looking for Ian. Maybe that might make it easier to look for him. Straightening his homework into a nice pile of papers and tossing his pencils and erasers into his pencil case, he wondered where Ian could have gone.
It was dark inside the pencil case. Cole's pencil case was basically just a "small" plastic box that had pouches for pencils and stuff that Cole never used. Other than that, it was pretty plain. Unfortunately, the pencils sticking out at odd angles and random bits of broken lead all over the place did not make for a soft landing. After checking for cuts and bruises (there were lots), Cole settled down on top of a 8 foot long eraser.
He couldn't really hear that much from inside the pencil box, but he could tell when James got fed up with Cole's "prank" and left. Relieved, Ian started to sit up to let Cole know where he was, but for some reason, realized that he couldn't move his foot. Looking down, he saw that it was tangled in a rubber band. Amidst the chaos of the pencil case, the other end of the rubber band was probably tied to a pen or a pencil somewhere. Reaching down, he tried to see if he could pull it free. No such luck.
Outside of the pencil, Ian could hear something very large moving, and the shifting of a great amount of paper. Suddenly, the top of the pencil case was opened and light streamed in. Raising his hand to block the sudden brightness, Ian saw huge beam like pencils fall from his brother's gigantic hand.
As the pencils and the erasers rained down around him into the case, Ian desperately clawed at the rubber band that was restraining him, when suddenly he felt something very heavy land on his back, intense pain, and then complete darkness.
After looking around his room for half an hour or so, Cole decided to go to bed and hope that Ian would turn up tomorrow. Ignoring his unfinished homework, Cole tossed his pencil case and his homework in his backpack and left it at the door for school tomorrow.
Lying down on his bed, Cole was exhausted. But when Cole closed his eyes, all he could see was Ian fighting a giant rat or getting crushed by their dad. Finally, after an hour of tossing and turning, Cole drifted off to a fitful sleep, dreaming about shrinking.
When Ian woke up, he found himself in a very uncomfortable position. It was still very dark and his back hurt like hell. After a moment, he remembered where he was, and the events that had happened yesterday. Ian wondered how much time had passed.
Lifting his arm to check the time on his watch, something felt very wrong. To make matters worse than they already were, his arm was twisted at an awkward angle. Trying to push himself up on his good arm so he could examine his broken arm, he instantly regretted it when pain shot through his body.
Ian found that his lower body was asleep and was completely pinned down by a very heavy, rubbery object he assumed was the eraser he had been sitting on earlier.
Suddenly, for some reason his attention was brought to bring his unbroken arm that ended in a tightly clenched fist. There was something small in that fist. Even before he looked at it, Ian already knew what it was. Bringing it up to his face, he slowly opened it, blood flowing out of small crescents embedded into the flesh of his palm from how tightly he had been clenching his fist. There, in the middle of his palm, laid a small packet of unmarked, pills with a note stuck to the back. On the note, it said five words.
Trust me. This will help.
Cole woke up in cold sweat. He glanced over at his digital alarm clock on his nightstand. It was exactly 3:00. He didn’t know what had caused him to wake up. All that he remembered was a feeling of intense cold and the moon going dark for a few seconds. But how did he know that the moon went dark? His eyes had been closed and there was a thick curtain was blocking his view from the window.
Slowly, an image started to form in his mind. A man. In a dark hood. With a pitch black coat. Holding a packet of unmarked pills. Then, as Cole watched, the man turned, and Cole knew that the man was looking at him. Then, the man disappeared and Cole fell asleep.
In the morning when he woke up, Cole had no recollection of the eerie, queer feeling he had the night before.
I hope there will be more interactions between brothers, such as a series of interactions after the younger brother gets angry and troubles his brother after being scolded by his father.
Look forward to the rest of the chapter.
