A brief tale inspired by The (Incredible) Shrinking Man..and the clip below. Scott Carey is three feet tall and looking out. He is awaiting the arrival of his nephew Billy (mentioned in the book but this is my own short-short story version. As in the film, the brother he has is named Charlie and not Marty...and is in the film, there is no daughter...
Scott looked out the window at the crowd outside. His story had made the TV and the papers. He was just over 36 inches tall now and trying to stay secluded at home. He could barely see out the window but there was the television truck, and a young boy and girl running around but being stopped by a cop.
He had resisted Louise's plan to go to work but she finally won out. Yes, they had gotten some money from the interviews but it would not be enough. Her working at a variety store for just a few hours a day would help. Who would be there with them? Why, his nephew Billy, of course. Charlie's son, 11 years old. It was summer and Charlie and Terry figured it would be nice to have young Billy watch over Scott--taking care of him. Even if it was just to be a companion. Billy had been over just the night before. 4 foot 8 and about 90 pounds. Seemed more like 9 foot 4, and 720 pounds, to tiny Scott. He looked up at the lad with his pocket T shirt and baseball cap, and impossibly huge sneakers. 36 weeks ago, he had towered over the boy. 20 weeks ago, they were the same height. He figured in another 6 weeks or so he would be waist high to the boy.
He's too young to drive, thought Scott. I am old enough but too small--well, he could with raised pedals but the encounter with the drunk 6 weeks ago was traumatic. He wanted to just go out and walk by himself--if he could get past the crowds--but the "giants" out there troubled him. He and Louise had been out for a walk a few days before and he saw some fifteen or sixteen year old boys looking down at him, knowing who he was.
What if he were to have Billy as his guardian angel? If they were to walk together then if they ran into the teens--no wait. It was ridiculous. Billy was huge to him but teens were just as huge to Billy.
And maybe it was just his mind acting out the stresses of the day but he had a dream the night before where he was surrounded by red cloth with an opening up top. He climbed up a bit and found he was sitting in Billy's shirt pocket. He was four inches tall or so. Billy and his parents were in a fast food restaurant and Billy was chewing on a burger, Tiny bits of bun, burger, and cheese were falling down into the pocket.
